What Can Eyelid Lift Surgery Do?
Correct Drooping Eyelids
Upper eyelid lift surgery can remove excess skin and fat from your upper eyelids. This can eliminate redundant folds and fat bags that make you appear tired or old.
Lower eyelid surgery can remove or reposition fat deposits under your eyes that cause bags which do not go away with rest. Muscle support is also tightened.
Eliminate Unwanted Eyelid Wrinkles
Wrinkles around the eyes are one of the first signs of aging. Eye lift surgery can remove excess sagging skin on your eyelids and tighten the skin around your eyes. This can reduce excess wrinkles and folds, including crow’s feet.
Blepharoplasty can markedly improve these signs of aging and restore the appearance of youth.
Improve Sightlines
Excess fat deposits or sagging skin that hangs from the upper eyelids can interfere with your ability to see properly. Eyelid surgery can correct these concerns and increase your range of sight.
In cases where your sagging eyebrows restrict your sightlines, you may require a brow lift surgery (forehead lift).

The Blepharoplasty Procedure Process
Eye Lift Consultation
Your consultation with Dr. Butler is an essential first step before your eyelid lift.
During this meeting, Dr. Butler will:
- Perform a physical examination of your eyes
- Review your medical history
- Discuss your desired goals for this procedure
- Determine the most appropriate surgical approach to address your concerns
- Explain your chosen surgical approach in great detail
Blepharoplasty procedures are performed in our Los Angeles office under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia.
Upper Eyelid Surgery
During upper blepharoplasty, an incision is made in the crease of your upper eyelid. This helps conceal the scars.
Excess fat and skin are removed, and the new form of your eyelid is secured. This corrects cosmetic or functional concerns and can also adjust the appearance of your eyes overall.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
Lower blepharoplasty incisions are usually hidden inside the lower eyelid (known as transconjunctival blepharoplasty). This technique conceals your eyelid lift scars entirely within the eyelid itself. When external incisions are necessary, they are made in skin creases or just under the lower lash line. In either case, your incisions should be difficult or impossible to see once they heal.
Once the incisions are made, unwanted fat is repositioned or reduced, the laxity of the lid is corrected, and, if present, excess skin is removed. Natural eyelid contours are restored.
Frequently Asked Questions About Eyelid Surgery
Am I a blepharoplasty candidate?
If you are displeased with the appearance of your eyelids, you may be a blepharoplasty candidate. If you are concerned with wrinkles, sagging skin, fat deposits, or sight restrictions around your eyes, an eyelid lift is likely to help. Ideal candidates are in good health and have realistic expectations.
How much is eyelid surgery in Santa Monica?
The cost of your eyelid lift will vary depending on the type of eyelid surgery you undergo, the extent of correction, and the techniques needed. Your blepharoplasty cost will also vary depending on if you get upper or lower blepharoplasty.
Your total eyelid surgery cost will also be affected if you choose to combine your operation with other procedures. After your consultation, Dr. Butler’s staff will discuss any associated fees.
How should I prepare for my eyelid surgery?
Before your eye surgery, you should make sure you have sunglasses to keep your eyes out of direct sunlight for two weeks after surgery. Polarized sunglasses are the best option. You should also make sure you are not taking any blood-thinning medications or supplements. Finally, you should avoid alcohol and tobacco products in the weeks leading up to your operation.
Are my eyelid lift results permanent?
The results of your eyelid lift will be long lasting. For most patients, the beneficial results of blepharoplasty last between 10 and 15 years. After that, your eyelids may once more have excess sagging skin or develop fat deposits. However, patients who have undergone blepharoplasty will still see some benefits to their eyelids for the rest of their lives.
What are the side effects of an eyelid lift?
Complications with eyelid lift surgery are rare, but they are possible. Visual changes in particular are very rare. Potential complications may include:
- Bleeding
- Excessive swelling
- Infection
- Dry eyes
- Itchy eyes
- Temporary light sensitivity
- Asymmetry
You can reduce your risk of developing these side effects by following all of Dr. Butler’s recommendations before and after the surgery.
What procedures can be combined with my eyelid lift?
Blepharoplasty can be combined with nonsurgical procedures such as laser treatments and dermal filler injections. These treatments can reduce wrinkles such as crow’s feet, eliminate bags under your eyes, and rejuvenate your skin.
Eyelid surgery can also be combined with facelift surgery, neck lift surgery, liposuction (liposculpture), or other facial procedures.
