In time, gravity, sun exposure, and the stresses of daily life take their toll on our faces: deep creases appear beside the mouth, the cheeks and jaw line slacken, and folds, hollows and displaced fat deposits appear. Some men and women show signs of advancing age in their late thirties, while some look quite youthful into their late seventies. What is useful to preserve or restore a youthful look must be individualized for each person. Facelifts counteract aging problems by tightening muscles, reducing or repositioning fat and smoothing lax skin, giving the face a fresher, youthful look.

Quite often precise addition of fat, or enhancement of facial bone support  to replace age-related volume loss, is essential to natural appearing rejuvenation. A facelift can be combined with a browlift, eyelid surgery or nasal reshaping for more dramatic results, or it can be restricted to the neck (necklift) if the patient’s problems center there. Incisions are made in inconspicuous places such as behind the hairline and in natural folds of the face and ears, and scars fade to near invisibility in time. While some patients do look much younger after surgery,  the goal is to match one’s rejuvenated appearance with the youth and vitality of one’s healthy lifestyle..

This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis in our fully-accredited Santa Monica surgery center under local anesthesia combined with sedation or general anesthesia. Results of a facelift do not last forever, but allow patients to continue to look younger than they would without surgery.

Facelift in Santa Monica Procedure
During the facelift procedure, an incision is made around the ear, sometimes extending into the scalp. There are several different techniques that may be used depending on each patient’s facial structure and desired goals, but most include sculpting, lifting and repositioning the underlying fat, muscle and deep tissues, while also trimming and redraping the skin for dramatic yet natural-looking results.

In most cases, a facelift is performed under general anesthesia, but may be performed under a local anesthetic and sedation for some patients. The entire procedure usually takes two to four hours to perform on an outpatient basis.

Recovery from a Facelift in Santa Monica
After a facelift, patients may experience mild discomfort, bruising, swelling and drainage for a few days. You can wash your hair after two days and can likely return to work within a week. It is recommended that patients avoid strenuous activity for four to six weeks after surgery until swelling has completely subsided.

The results of the facelift will be immediately noticeable and will continue to improve for up to three months, as swelling and other side effects begin to fade. While results are not permanent and do not make patients immune to the effects of aging, you will continue to look younger than if you had never undergone any treatment.
